Marie Davidson / OK EG / KDV Performance Group with Hamill Industries & Tayhana

Sun 31 Aug

Melbourne Town Hall

Three singular forces converge for a night of radical artistic expression in sound, movement and light.

Québécois artist Marie Davidson is the pre-eminent techno-pop icon for our times, shattering the conventions of dance music as we know it. Davidson’s style thunders with intensity, underscored by an acerbic vocal delivery and candid lyricism that interrogates identity, power, and societal norms.

CORTEX by the Kianí del Valle Performance Group draws you into the liminal space between life and death, solitude and connection. Born from the depths of grief, the work contemplates the human brain’s role in seeking existence beyond mortality. It features visceral choreography by Kianí del Valle, visual direction by Barcelona-based visual artists, Hamill Industries, and an original score by Tayhana, a trailblazer in the Argentinian club scene.

Rounding out the bill is OK EG, the uncompromising project of Narrm-based synth fetishists Lauren Squire and Matthew Wilson. With propulsive rhythm workouts and analog-drenched textures, OK EG are total head turners, channelling the pulse of the underground through an unflinching artistic lens.

  • City of Clowns will go off in an un-air-conditioned warehouse, but the album’s philosophical basis underlines something that’s become stunningly obvious recently: Global tech is in ethical, moral, and political decline. Davidson’s album asks that techno—a genre founded in technofuturist hopes for a more advanced, more just society—reckon with the specific ways that surveillance capitalism has compromised those ideals.
