For Those In Peril // Hold Back The Night

Thurs 21 Aug — Sun 31 Aug

Federation Bells

Sound becomes ceremony and terrain becomes score in this site-responsive work by Narrm-based ambient duo Namazu.

Composers Brett O’Riley and Gerard Mason craft compositions where space becomes instrument. This iteration traces an upstream journey along the Yarra River, harnessing three iconic sonic landmarks: the acoustically striking Norla Dome, the Melbourne Town Hall Grand Organ, and the Federation Bells at Birrarung Marr.

Together, they form a contemplative triptych – moving from meditative drift to eerie undercurrent. The organ moans with dissonant tones that echo the land’s grief; the bells chime with ancient frequency; and the river runs through it all. This is a slow burn. A requiem. A call across time.
